Melbourne Brewery Tour – The East

Explore Melbourne’s east with a brewery tour using the frequent, and easy to use trams.

Our Melbourne Brewery Tour – The East tour takes you to four breweries.

and two pubs

The tour starts in Clifton Hill which is a 20 minute tram ride from the centre.

Clifton Hill Brewpub

The old exterior of the Clifton Hill Brewpub doesn’t prepare you for the modern interior and colour scheme.

Clifton Hill Brewpub, Melbourne The small brewery is hidden between the bar and the restaurant, and produces a small range of quality beers, all on tap together with offerings from other local breweries. The restaurant is a great place for lunch with it’s wide range of dishes.

Just outside the door is the tram stop for the 10 minute ride back towards the city and onto the first pub.

Forester’s Hall

The Forester’s Hall pub is right next to the tram stop.  Its 50 taps serving 32 different craft beers should be more than enough choice to keep everyone happy.

Forester's Hall, MelbourneThe knowledgable bar staff can help you decide, or just head straight to the paddles of four beers.  The range is mainly from the local area and often includes specials brewed solely for the pub.

If you haven’t eaten or want to top up, then the home-made, artisan pizzas fresh from the pizza oven are hard to resist.

A short 3 minute walk to Victoria Parade to catch the next 10 minute tram ride brings you to the next brewery.

Moon Dog Brewery

The Moon Dog Brewery is a short walk from the tram stop near Duke Street.  It’s easy to see which industrial building is the brewery from the large appropriately branded water tank outside.Moon Dog Brewery, Melbourne

Inside is an eclectic mix of tables, chairs, barrels and couches all leading up to the small bar, behind which is the small brewery. Make sure you are there at 2pm on a Saturday as the free brewery tour is a must. The bottling and kegging area are now in the next door unit.

Six taps dispense the wonder of Moon Dog beers which go perfectly with the novel element of the free popcorn. Just salty enough to keep you drinking more of the wonderfully tasty beers. A food cart outside satisfies any further food cravings.

The next journery is a choice of a 5 minute tram ride then a 5 minute walk, or a 15 minute walk to the Royston Hotel.

The Royston Hotel

The Royston Hotel is a warm and welcoming locals pub that features an unusal horseshoe shaped bar.

The Royston Hotel, MelbourneAlmost an institution, The Royston was the first pub in Melbourne that featured only craft beer.  It’s 12 taps now feature 5 permanent beers and 7 guests, whilst the handpump is reserved for dark, malty or English style ales.

While you are here, make sure you visit the pool room and maybe take on some of the locals.

You can either retrace your steps to the tram stop on Victoria Street or if you are visiting on a Wednesday or Friday evening then you can cross the road to the Mountain Goat Brewery.

Mountain Goat Brewery

The very limited opening times of the Mountain Goat Brewery mean that you can only visit on Wednesday and Fridays from 5pm.

Mountain Goat Brewery, MelbourneThe large space and bar overlooked by the brewery are a perfect place to try the range, including the latest seasonals and specials alongside the one beer brewed solely for the bar.

Brewery tours take place at 6pm.

The 10 minute tram ride from Victoria Street, heading east, will bring you to Kew for the 115 Grill & Brewhouse.

115 Grill & Brewhouse

The 115 Grill & Brewhouse is part of a new hotel.

115 Grill & Brewhouse, MelbourneThe brewery is clearly visible through the floor to ceiling glass panels with various beer quotes on them. The small bar with its high tables or low cushioned seats offers up the range of 6 beers.  An unusual feature of the tap labels is the addition of the brew batch numbers.

With it being a hotel, food is always of offer and the shared plates go well with the mainly light beer range.

From the tram stop outside, it’s a 35 minute ride back to the centre of the city.
