Comment: Is Victoria still the home of Australian Craft Beer?

Since the rise of Craft Beer in Australia started about 10 years ago, Victoria is always quoted as being the home of that revolution.

Is Victoria still the home of Australian Craft Beer?

Well, yes, if you base it on the number of craft beer breweries in each state.  As part of our research into the number of craft beer breweries, we found more in Victoria than any other state.  But only just.

The number of craft beer breweries in each state is:

  • 76 in Victoria
  • 72 in New South Wales
  • 34 in Western Australia
  • 26 in Queensland
  • 25 in South Australia
  • 10 in Tasmania
  • 3 in the ACT
  • 1 in the Northern Territory
  • 1 on Norfolk Island*

A total of 248.

Recent press is still putting the number at variously 130, 150, or even 175, but the revolution is moving even faster than most thought.  And thats a great thing.

And with about one new brewery opening a month, together with expansions by the existing breweries into their own bars and tasting rooms, the future looks great for lovers of Australian craft beer.

* Norfolk Island is part of the Commonwealth of Australia, so we have included it.
