Gold Coast and Byron Bay

Explore the Gold Coast and Byron Bay with a short brewery tour.

Our Gold Coast and Byron Bay tour takes you to six breweries and one pub.

The tour starts in the Gold Coast Hinterland town of Tamborine Mountain.  Usually known for wine, it now features the new Fortitude Brewing site.

Fortitude Brewing

Off Long Road, not far from the roundabout is the site of the Fortitude Brewing Co, and its stablemate, the Noisy Minor Brewing Co.

At the end of the row of food related outlets is the brewery bar and tasting room.  Here you’ll find both breweries beers on tap, right next to the brewery visible through the glass windows.

A large seating area, often frequented by passing bus tour groups, is large enough for all visitors.  As it’s the start of the day, there are plenty of food options to prepare you for the rest of the tour.

After, there is an option is to take a short 10 minute diversion to Tamborine village and the Bearded Dragon pub.  The pub covers a large area offering accommodation, a wedding venue and crocodile and reptile shows.  More importantly, it is the home of Beard & Brau beers on tap.

From Fortitude, a 30 minute drive down the mountain and over the Pacific Highway brings you to Nerang.

Gold Coast Brewery

Mainly a brew your own on premises location, the small bar area, with a couple of tasting taps offers tastings of some of the huge range of Gold Coast beers.

A 10 minute drive further south brings you to a small industrial estate just off the Pacific Highway at Burleigh Heads.

Burleigh Brewing Co

Whilst the bar is only open for tap sales on a Friday night, the shop is open for sales of the wide range of beers to take away.  Head up the stairs and ring the bell and someone will help you choose from the range.

Back on the Pacific Highway heading south for 20 minutes brings you to yet another small industrial estate just off the highway at Tweed Heads.

Pickled Pig Brewery

On the corner in a small courtyard of industrial units off Industry Drive is the Pickled Pig Brewery.

DSC_4072v2Another mainly brew on premises location, the brewery does brew a range of beers for commercial sale in the local area.

You can sample the current range in the midst of all the brewing equipment and buy take away bottles (or even a keg).  The Jinga Beer is rather good.

Stone & Wood

More travelling south on the Pacific Highway for 40 minutes, and a short drive off the highway will bring you to Boronia Place, the original home of Stone & Wood and still used as a brewery for their limited release beers.

Just on the right towards the end of the road is the strangely small brewery that started to pump out Pacific Ale (now brewed in Murwillumbah).

DSC_4159v2A recent move around and refurbishment has created more space and whilst there is no formal bar or tasting room, the staff will likely show you around and give you a taste of the beers.  Full brewery tours are held on Wednesday and Friday afternoon at 3.00pm.

A 10 minute drive through the centre of Byron Bay will bring you to Skinners Shoot Road.

Byron Bay Brewing Co

Part of the complex of tourist related activities at the end of the road is the Byron Bay Brewing Co.

DSC_4092v2The brewery takes up a very small room on the right as you enter the main building with the fermenting tanks on your left as you walk to the bar.

The bar is part of an extensive restaurant that gets very busy in summer, as the site also offers a range of accommodation.  The full range of beers are available with an occasional seasonal beer in a surfboard style paddle.

This tour can also be done from south to north, as the Fortitude Brewing site has a number of food outlets, or end at the Bearded Dragon and it’s fine restaurant.  You could even stay there overnight.
