Brewery Data – ACT (Canberra)

Following on from our overview of the History and Growth of Australian Craft Beer Breweries, we’ve compiled a range of brewery data for each state and territory.

The data is correct at the end of December 2016 and is based on data collected to compile our Brewery List.

Having looked at all the states, the first territory we covering is the ACT, or Canberra.  Previously we have looked at all the states: Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Tasmania.

There a total of 6 craft beer breweries where the oldest still open is Wig & Pen Pub & Brewery, which opened in 1994, although it has moved since then.

This represents a density of 2.0 breweries per 100,000 18+ adults, or there is one brewery for roughly every 51,000 people.

In terms of size, we’ve grouped them to align roughly with the CBIA criteria for size of brewery.  This means that:

  • 17% are contract, or gypsy brewers
  • 50% are small breweries. These are the nano and pub breweries
  • 33% are medium size. These are the micro-breweries producing between 50,000 and 300,000 litres per year
  • There are no large breweries. These are the ones that have a regional and national presence.

In the past five years the number of breweries has risen from 2 in 2011 to 6 at the end of 2016.  An increase of 300%.

The next state/territory we will be looking at is the Northern Territory.
